High up in the Sierra Nevada mountains, overlooking Donner Lake, are the abandoned tunnels that remain from the first transcontinental railroad route. In 1993, after 125 years of use, Southern Pacific shifted train traffic to a newer tunnel and ripped the rails up, leaving these tunnels to slowly decay and collapse.
